Although the railway through Trimley opened on May 1, 1877 it was not until May 1, 1891 that the station at Trimley was opened. Initially services ran between Ipswich and Felixstowe Pier. Once Felixstowe Town opened in 1898 trains ran there and direct services to Beach and Pier stations were discontinued.
In 2009 Network Rail were planning to demolish the station building but determined local opposition has seen a stay of execution (as at August 2010). It is hoped that the building will find some community use.[1]
In October 2010 Suffolk Coastal Council carried out a local residents survey to try to ascertain local support for the station project and to see whether a business plan could be formulated. The results are available at the web address below. By November 2011 no use had been found for the deteriorating structure although it was announced that Network Rail has reprieved the station for a further three months.[2]. This report in Rail magazine seems to contradict a report on the Suffolk Coastal web site which seem to suggest Trimley's distinctive station buildings have a future. [3] However on 21st December 2012 a press release posted on the Suffolk Coastal website (and printed in the East Anglian Daily Times dated 23rd December) announced volunteers had formed a company to save the station and had a two year lease from Network Rail [4]

Trimley used to operate two platforms for passengers; one for each direction of service between Felixstowe and Ipswich. However, the southern platform was decommissioned in May 1987 and all passenger services now operate from the one, northern platform. The southern platform is now part of a freight line that runs down to Felixstowe Docks.
It was also equipped with a small goods yard which closed in 1964.[5]
Between previous station 'Derby Road' and 'Trimley' was a station called 'Orwell'. Now closed, but the station house is occupied and can be glimpsed through the trees especially after dark when it can look quite eerie. The Orwell Goods yard is also fairly obvious as a large clearing in the forest just south of the old station.
There is a Help Point in the station.
